Blackwater Drowning – often referred to as BWD – is a melodic death metal band from Charlotte, North Carolina, known for their intense energy, blistering riffs, and thought-provoking lyrics. Since their formation in 2014, they have built a strong reputation in the metal scene, sharing the stage with heavyweights like Soulfly, Jinjer, Suffocation, Butcher Babies, and more.
The name Blackwater Drowning reflects the band’s thematic depth — “blackwater” represents darkness and rebirth, while “drowning” symbolizes being consumed by that darkness. Their lyrics explore themes of injustice, social struggles, and existential unsureity, adding layers of meaning to their relentless sound.
In 2021, the band signed with Extreme Management Group (EMG), joining a roster of renowned metal acts like Suffocation, Cryptopsy, and Decrepit Birth. Their return to live shows at the Metal In The Mountains Festival marked a new chapter in their journey, proving their place as a force to be reckoned with in modern metal.
In 2022, after a successful series of EPs, the band released their debut full-length album, Sonder//Satori, recorded at Blackplate Productions with producers Jon Berrier and Garrett Barefoot. Their sound blends blackened screams, soaring melodies, crushing grooves, and death metal aggression, drawing comparisons to acts such as The Black Dahlia Murder, Soilwork, and Darkest Hour.
In 2023, the band joined forces with Blood Blast (a subsidiary of Nuclear Blast) for worldwide distribution of the aforementioned full-length record.
In 2025, the band signed a new artist management deal with Bleeding Arts Collective.
In 2026, the band released their sophomore full length album ‘Obscure Sorrows’ and a slew of music videos to support the record. The band signed with Cutthroat Continental and has supported artists like Filth, Butcher Babies, Infected Rain, and The Ex-Faces (ex-Mushroomhead Members) with no plans to slow down.
